What is the halving?

Every 210,000 blocks, the reward Bitcoin miners receive for each new block is cut in half. Since a block is produced every 10 minutes on average, that happens roughly every four years. New issuance keeps shrinking until it stops, around the year 2140, at 21 million in total.
