—What is Bitcoin?
Bitcoin is the first cryptocurrency. It was introduced in 2008 in a paper signed under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto, and its network went live in January 2009. No one controls it: thousands of computers around the world keep a copy of the same transaction record, the blockchain.
Its best-known rule is scarcity: there will never be more than 21 million bitcoin. New coins are created as a reward for whoever validates blocks (mining, using proof of work), and that reward is cut in half every 210,000 blocks, roughly every four years. That event is called the halving.
